There isn’t any other profession quite like teaching. Where else do you encounter things such as:
• A schedule, with bells.
• Recess Duty – enough said.
• The inability to go to the bathroom without finding coverage and announcing where you are going.
• Professional Development days where multiple Power-Point presentations are read to you.
In what other profession do you find yourself saying things like:
• “Please don’t eat the glue.”
• “Stop licking that, please!”
• Honestly, some days are just reduced to, “What?! Why?!”
In the course of my teaching career, I realized:
TEACHING IS WILD!
And I invite you to:
COME WALK THE WILD WITH ME!
I’ve been an elementary teacher for over 18 years, and I’ve taught before, during and after Covid. (Just in case you were curious)
I’ve held class in-person and online, and can speak to challenges teachers face with both. My credentials are in Child Development with Elementary Teaching, Curriculum Development and Teaching, and Educational Technology.
As I entered my undergraduate school, I remember feeling panicked during my orientation into Elementary Education, like something wasn’t quite right.
I asked the person in charge if there was any way I could also teach 4-year-olds, even though that age group isn’t normally in elementary schools. She rolled her eyes and asked if I was sure. When I replied, “Yes”, she took out a notebook, labeled it, “List of Problems” and promptly wrote my name down.
Great. And so, my teaching career begins....
However, this interaction led me to pursue Child Development with Elementary Teaching, and as I dug into the material, I knew I had found the right place!
My Child Development classes focused on the stages of children’s development, from infants through adolescents, so it is especially helpful when teaching elementary grades.
This program gave me the tools to learn what to say in the classroom and how to say it to students in a way that works, especially when there are behavior challenges happening!
Child Development also gave me the skills to create lessons and units that are developmentally appropriate for each age group.
Usually, the term, “developmentally appropriate” is used when talking about Kindergarten and maybe 1st grade. But being developmentally appropriate shouldn’t end there, and is helpful throughout all the grades.
This experience guided me to create and use the strategies that I've packaged together, and now share with you through my units and courses!
I was so excited to begin teaching! Everything is new and changes are happening constantly. I remember just wanting things to stay the same for a couple of years.
However, as soon as I was teaching the same grade for a few years, I found myself getting antsy. My grade-level team and I were completing the same main projects each year, and while the students really enjoyed them, I wanted something new.
This inspired me to seek out a degree in Educational Technology. I knew technology could be used to further students’ learning in fun and creative ways, I just wasn’t sure how…yet.
I was able to secure 7 iPads for my classroom, and proceeded to use them with my students.
One night, I woke up at 3 in the morning in a panic! So far, the students were using the iPads like an electric pencil and paper, opening up an app and practicing math facts and reading passages and clicking the answers.
• Are these iPads just expensive pencils and paper?
• How is using iPads like this helping my students’ academic growth?
• How can I justify the expense?
This anxiety induced night led me to further investigate different ways to use the iPads and Chromebooks to push higher order thinking skills in my classroom.
After discovering different ways to accomplish this, I started sharing my strategies with my teacher besties and through Edtech Conferences throughout my state.
The feedback I received was amazing! Teachers were really interested in what I shared. And I started to think about what I could do to reach more teachers.
Which brings me to today. The strategies I created and used in my classroom made teaching and learning fun and exciting for me and for my students. It also motivated my students to work hard to achieve their academic goals.
It’s amazing to see how much students grow emotionally and academically throughout the year and my mission is to share what I discovered with you, so you can create your best classroom learning environment and watch your students succeed!
